TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The 1958 Christmas special has become a much-loved Christmas Eve tradition on Swedish TV and regularly scores viewer numbers among the highest of the year. It was first broadcast in Sweden in 1960 and has seen some reshuffling to accommodate scenes from Disney movies, but since 1983 the bulk of the program has remained fixed. When public-service TV (SVT) attempted to remove it from the schedule because of the costly license to be paid Disney, the popular outcry forced them to relent. Part of the reason the tradition became so strong was that for many years, American-style cartoons were not much shown on television in Sweden.

The Swedish title is "Kalle Anka och hans vänner önskar God Jul" (Donald Duck and His Friends Wish You a Merry Christmas), often referred to as simply "Kalle Anka" (Donald Duck). The Swedish narrator is Bengt Feldreich.

Popular Dialogues

"Himself - Host: Jiminy Cricket and Mickey Mouse are putting on this Christmas program. They insist I appear cricket-sized because, as they put it, Christmas is bigger than all of us. [to the side] Himself - Host: Okay, fellas, I've said it. [to the viewer] Himself - Host: Before turning the program over to Jiminy, Mickey and the rest of the cartoon critters, on behalf of the human critters of our organization, may I say, from all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas. [to the side] Himself - Host: Okay, Miss Tink, on with the show!"

"Jiminy Cricket: Every year, about this time, we can expect a visit from old Santa Claus. But this year, we're going to turn the tables on him. We're going to pay *him* a visit! Okay, button your coat, pull down your hat, don't even take time to put out the cat! We gotta get going to the land of snow! Just take a deep breath, and wheeee! Away we go!"
