Matthias Schoenaerts was the original choice for the role of Roy Cady when the project was announced in 2014. After two years in development, he was replaced by Ben Foster in 2016.

Nic Pizzolatto, who adapted his own novel, decided to use a pseudonym after seeing the movie because some changes were made by the director and didn't feel the final result was his screenplay.

Mélanie Laurent's English-language directorial debut. She had previously directed two feature films and a documentary in France.
