Omar Sharif was furious when he learned that Eli Wallach was paid $25,000 per week, more than Sharif was paid for the entire film. Wallach had taken his role after a London play he was scheduled to appear in collapsed, and he was in urgent need of a quick payday.
Although the movie takes place in Asia, it was shot in Yugoslavia.
70mm blow-up version released in West Germany.
The film was a favorite guilty pleasure for Stanley Kubrick, and is thought to be directly responsible for Sir Michael Hordern being chosen as the narrator of Barry Lyndon (1975).
Released in 70MM and also advertised as having 6-track stereophonic sound in Sydney, Australia's long gone Barclay Cinema.
"Geen: [about the Caravan Road] The Shah of Khwarezm imposed a truce. All have sworn to it. All observe it. No warrior is permitted to carry arms here. Temujin, later Genghis Khan: Good, then we can take our pick without fighting! Shan: You do not understand, Temujin. A truce was signed! Temujin, later Genghis Khan: I did not sign it, the slaves did not sign it. Geen: But...! Temujin, later Genghis Khan: [Interrupts] Will there be women among the slaves? Geen: Yes, lord... Temujin, later Genghis Khan: Good. My men have horses and weapons, but no women. How long do you think they will stay without women? [At Shan] Temujin, later Genghis Khan: How long will you? [Shan smirks]"
"Temujin, later Genghis Khan: Born a slave, I never was!"
