The role of Poppy was written specifically for Sally Hawkins.
Sally Hawkins and Alexis Zegerman became good friends during filming. Hawkins invited Zegerman along to the 66th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, on the eve when she eventually won for her performance in this film.
Eddie Marsan admittedly had a hard time shaking off his character in this film. Just two days the production wrapped, he began his work on Hancock (2008) opposite Will Smith and arrived on set with a grumpy and irritated mood.
During preparation for the film, Sally Hawkins stayed in character of Poppy and took her to the streets of London.
Sally Hawkins' third film with director Mike Leigh.
"Scott: Bear with me. Poppy: Is there? Where is he?"
"[repeated line] Scott: En-ra-ha!"
