The movie was not the cinema film debut of singer Rick Springfield who had previously portrayed Lieutenant Zac in the feature film Battlestar Galactica (1978). This was despite the fact that film posters for the movie boasted slogans like "Rick Springfield in his motion picture debut".
The movie featured at the time seven brand new Rick Springfield songs.
When offered a choice between a role in The Right Stuff (1983) and this movie, Rick Springfield chose this one because it meant he would have the leading role.
Rick Springfield wrote most of the seven new songs used on the soundtrack on set. "Love Somebody" was written while filming at the Fairmont Hotel.
The movie was designed as a star vehicle for rock star Rick Springfield and to both promote the singer and his music and establish him as a viable screen icon.
"Diana Lawson: Will you stop harassing me? I know who you are, you're a rock person of some sort. James Roberts: Do you like my music? Diana Lawson: No, I don't like your music. James Roberts: Why? Diana Lawson: It's bubblegum! James Roberts: Yeah? Well 21 million Americans seem to think different! Diana Lawson: Well, bully for them! James Roberts: *Bully* for them? What kind of word is "bully"? What kind of music do you like? Diana Lawson: Tony Bennett. James Roberts: Jesus... Diana Lawson: No... Tony Bennett!"
"Diana Lawson: [trying to wake up Jamie and get him to leave after sleeping with him] James... time for you to go! James Roberts: [waking up sleepily] What? Are you serious? I can't believe you're doing this... Diana Lawson: Oh, and you've never asked anyone to leave, right? James Roberts: We just made love! Diana Lawson: No we didn't... we just had sex!"
