The film has a veritable Irish All-Star cast: This is the only time Gabriel Byrne, David Kelly, Colm Meaney and Brendan Gleeson appear together in the same film - though Meaney and Gleeson had roles in Far and Away (1992).
The name of the white horse is Tír na nÓg. This is Irish for "Land of Eternal Youth".
Several horses were used for the white horse during filming. Mostly they were specially trained stunt/trick horses, but for a few shots a purebred Irish Connemara Pony was also used.
The father explains to the boys that Murphy is the most common last name in Ireland. This is true.
Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne were married to each other when the film was made.
"Tito: We can't go to jail. Ossie: Why not? Tito: We're much too young. We can go to a home, though. Ossie: We have a home, Tito. Tito: I know, but this is a home where they don't letcha out. Ossie: That's a jail."
"[last lines] Papa Reilly: There's a bit of a traveler in everybody, Tito. But very few of us know where we're goin'."
