The film was announced with a text message: "You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming - May 21st, 2021."
Was initially set to be released on the same day as The Matrix Resurrections (2021), which also stars Keanu Reeves, but moved because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The series was supposed to be a trilogy during or shortly after John Wick (2014) was made. Seeing its growing success, the filmmakers wanted to make sure to continue to expand the universe in which the films take place.
At 169 minutes (2h 49m) of runtime, this is the longest film in the John Wick franchise thus far.
Both Chad Stahelski and Bill Skarsgård are a part of The Crow franchise, Stahelski was the stuntman who completed The Crow (1994) after Brandon Lee's death and Skarsgård will star in Rupert Sanders' reboot of The Crow.
