This was David Tennant's first film.
Christopher Eccleston (Jude Fawley) and David Tennant (Drunk Undergraduate) both later portrayed the Doctor in Doctor Who (2005). The former played the Ninth Doctor from March to June 2005 while the latter played the Tenth Doctor from June 2005 to January 2010.
Some press reports stated that the pig which Arabella kills and guts was a real pig being killed and gutted for real. This has been denied by Rachel Griffiths who insists she was given the carcass of a dead animal to portray the scene.
Kate Winslet appeared full frontal nude in this film. When asked how comfortable she was with her first nude scene, she said: "Not at all! No way! Oh, it was awful. I was so nervous, I starved myself for a month. I went through all the paranoias: My bum's massive. My breasts are saggy. I've got a spotty back, chicken arms. I can't do it." But she did. "I just had to keep remembering the scene was a real turning point and get on with it. And at the end of the day you forget you're completely naked."
Filming took place between October and December in locations in Yorkshire, Durham, Scotland and New Zealand which stood in for an English Summer. Hardy's present day Wessex was seen as being too small and over restored.
"[last lines] Jude Fawley: We are man and wife, if ever two people were on this earth."
"Sue: Why are you looking at me like that? Jude Fawley: Does it scare you? Sue: No. I am not afraid of any man. Jude Fawley: Why? Sue: Because no man would touch a woman unless she gives him reason to. A touch or a look that say come on. If you never look, they'll never come. You are the timid sex."
