The film never received distribution outside of festival screenings in director Kathleen Collins's lifetime. It was only decades after she died, that her daughter, who had inherited the negatives of the film, approached Milestone Films, and asked them to help restore and release the film.
Both Bill Gunn (Victor) & Seret Scott (Sarah) played on episodes of Bill Cosby shows. Gunn was on The Cosby Show (1984), and Seret, Cosby (1996).
In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
