The fourth of sixteen Hardy family films starring Mickey Rooney. Due to Rooney's rising star status and the increasing focus on his character in the films, this is the first one with "Andy Hardy" in the title. The first of three Hardy films featuring Judy Garland as Betsy Booth. Just the second film pairing Mickey and Judy, they would eventually appear in ten films together.
Shot on a 19-day production schedule with an additional week allotted for Judy Garland's production numbers. Released a mere two months after production wrapped.
During filming, on May 23, 1938, Judy was in a car accident which sprained her back, punctured a lung, and gave her three broken ribs. A testament to her recuperative powers, she bounced back and returned to Hardy set on June 11, 1938, the day after sixteenth birthday.
The convertible car Andy drives is a highly customized 1931 Ford Model A Roadster, with a Chevrolet single blade bumper, Chevrolet ventilation panels, and custom wheels.
Although her character is mentioned to be "12 or 13 years old," Judy Garland was 15 years old when she filmed this.
"Betsy: I sing, you know."
