TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Gene Hackman had been experiencing pains in his back. The movie's insurance company refused to allow the shooting to continue because a permanent injury to Hackman could have cost it a lot of money. The insurers suggested shooting the movie somewhere in the deserts of the United States. But the color of the sand dunes in Agadir is not the same as the color of the sand in Nevada. Several big American transport planes were used to transport tons of sand from the Agadir dunes in order to camouflage the sand of Nevada. (Source: Beyond Casablanca, Page 131).

This movie was being made in Spain at the same time Marty Feldman was making the comedy The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977). The productions for both movies fought over the supply of horses, camels, costumes, and places of shooting. Some extras appeared in the wrong movie on one occasion.

El Krim (Sir Ian Holm) was based on the Moroccan revolutionary Abd el-Krim (1882-1963), the leader of a large-scale armed resistance movement in the Rif, a Berber area of northeastern Morocco. He became the first president of Rif-Republic (1921-26).

Selected by Quentin Tarantino for the First Quentin Tarantino Film Fest in Austin, Texas, 1996.

In the mid 1950s, it was announced that Errol Flynn would be starring in his first television series, a French Foreign Legion show, which would have gone by the title "March or Die". It never materialized.

Popular Dialogues

"[last lines] [facing a line of new recruits, citing Major Foster's earlier speech] Marco Segrain: Some of you men will try to quit. Others will try to run away. No man in this command as ever succeeded. If the Legion doesn't get you, the desert will. If the desert doesn't, the Arabs will. And if the Arabs don't, then I will. I don't know which is worse."

"El Krim: [showing Foster and his patrol the dead body of a legionnair] One of my men got restless. Maj. William Sherman Foster: [an Arab walks over to the body and spits in his face. Suddenly Segrain shoots the Arab at point blank range. Everyone is pointing weapons at everyone] One of my men got restless."
