The film premiered at the 2012 Rome Film Festival where it won top honors. On November 20, 2012, the film was released on Larry Clark's website priced at $5.99 for one-day streaming access. There are no plans to release the film in theaters or on DVD. Clark said this online-only distribution was a way of bypassing "crooked Hollywood distributors." On May 19, 2014, Spotlight Pictures announced that it had secured worldwide rights to distribute the film on all platforms. Streaming access to the film was then removed from Clark's website.
Shot exclusively in Marfa, a small town in Presidio County, Texas. Larry Clark cast a mix of professional and non-professional actors for the roles.
Larry Clark got the idea for the film one day when he decided to make a movie strictly for the Internet. He said, "It's so hard to get a film made, especially an art film with your own final cut. So I thought, 'Why don't I just do it myself, set up a website and get it going.' I decided to get rid of the middlemen, producers and the like. Anyway, they're all crooks. I never got paid for my movies. The Internet is happening, people make a video and it gets a million hits, so fuck it, let's do it."
Director Larry Clark admitted to using opiates during filming due to pain from a double knee replacement. He has stated in interviews that he abstains from drug use during filmmaking due to a lifelong struggle with drugs.
A sequel titled Marfa Girl 2 (2018), also written and directed by Larry Clark, was released in 2018.
