The prison scenes were mostly shot at Cork Prison which had been closed down just weeks before shooting began.
The movie was shot in the old Cork prison except the scenes in the prisoner's cells. These were shot using sets at Gothenburg Studios in Sweden.
The movie was originally going to be filmed on a purpose built prison set, but then Cork prison became available for shooting after the real prisoners were moved across the road to a new facility.
