Damian Harris asked Ellen Barkin' to portray her character three different ways: 1) Palmer knew she was attracted to Vickie, 2) Palmer wasn't attracted to Vickie, and 3) Palmer wasn't sure if she was attracted to Vickie. Harris would then edit the takes together, giving the audience an unsure vibe of what Detective Palmer thought of Vickie.
Ellen Barkin improvised the movement where Catherine lifted her arm to assist Vickie with her jacket removal during their sex scene, as well as her leaning in to indicate her desire for oral sex.
In the original script, Catherine had a female partner who Vickie was also attracted to.
In the original script, the sex scene between Catherine and Vickie took place in the ladies room of the police station.
Charlize Theron, Julie Bowen, Julie Benz, Christina Ricci, and Thora Birch were considered for the role of Vickie Kittrie.
"Mechanic: So, you're a cop? Det. Catherine Palmer: Yeah. You like that? Mechanic: Yeah. What do you work, vice? Det. Catherine Palmer: Homicide. Mechanic: That's a little weird, isn't it? I mean, you being a woman and all? Det. Catherine Palmer: [pause] What do you do? Mechanic: Mechanic. I fix things. Det. Catherine Palmer: Say you got an old lady, she comes into the shop.
