Director Tina Hirsch edited the very similar Gremlins (1984). Robert Picardo would go on to appear in Gremlins 2: The New Batch and numerous other films by Gremlins director Joe Dante. In two of these, Innerspace and The 'Burbs, Wendy Schaal also appeared.

The car the Munchies escape from Cecil's house in is an AMC Gremlin,which is a reference to the movie of the same name.
Arnold's voice sounds like Gizmo the Mogwai, while other Munchies sound like Cheech Marin, Doctor Claw, Pepé Le Pew, and Dumb Donald.
The front license plate of the AMC Gremlin automobile driven by the Munchies says "OHGIZMO". A nod to the classic 1984 Gremlins film.
