The movie was originally meant to have a worldwide theatrical release on September 24, 2021, with Paramount Pictures being its distributor. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatrical release was canceled, and Netflix bought the rights to debut the movie onto their streaming platform. Russia was the only country to screen the movie in theaters.
The Unicorn filly Izzy has a similar color scheme and cutie mark to the G1 Pony named Buttons.
Sunny Starscout's father dies prior to the main events of the film, and his death affects his daughter considerably. The film also depicts the mother of co-protagonists Zipp and Pipp (who are sisters) and the mother of antagonist Sprout as single mothers. Meaning that none of the film's main cast has an active father or father figure.
Zipp is Pipp's older sister. Her full name is Princess Zephyrina Storm.
In the film, a minor character introduces himself as Rob. The character was voiced by director Rob Cullen, who used the scene to make a director's cameo.
"Hitch Trailblazer: [grabs a random filly and hands it to a nearby pony] Your son is safe now, ma'am. [runs off] Woman Pony: This isn't my kid! Hitch Trailblazer: You're welcome!"
"Hitch Trailblazer: Where's my badge? Hey, you! I know unicorns like shiny things! Izzy Moonbow: Oh, you know, I think I did see a shiny badgey thing on the ground a few hours ago.
