IMDbThis movie is loosely based on case of serial killer Robert Hansen, who would kidnap prostitutes in Alaska, fly them to remote forest locations, rape them, make them take off running, then hunt them down and kill them.
Diana draws several parallels with actual victims of Robert Hansen, including: Cindy Paulson, the only known victim to escape from Hansen's captivity;Sue Luna, who was stripped naked and forced to run through a forest while Hansen hunted her like a wild animal, and was ultimately shot to death;Paula Goulding, who was found shot in the back but with no bullet holes in her clothes, indicating that she was naked when she was killed, and redressed afterwards; and"Eklutna Annie", the only Hansen victim who still remains unidentified, whom Hansen claimed was either a prostitute or stripper.
Diana was also the name of the patron goddess of hunting in Roman mythology.
The promotional poster is patently similar to Crazy Eights (2006) of a year before.
The first victim seen in the introductory scene appears to be around 40-50 years of age, suggesting she may based partly on Lisa Futrell, who at age 41 was the eldest known victim of Robert Hansen.
"VW Van Guy: [fixing their shot out tire] Hey check this out, I think we ran over a bullet."
"Diana Kelper: [to the guy giving her a ride] So, how'd you know who I was? Fred: Picture. Here. Keep it if you want. Diana Kelper: [laughs] That was a crazy night, that night, winning that contest. [shakes head] Fred: How much did you get? Diana Kelper: Oh, twenty-five bucks, is all, and this... little plastic trophy that totally broke before I even got it home. The bottom part fell off. It just goes to show, you never know what's gonna happen, I mean, that talent scout being there, and I almost didn't enter the contest at all, if my friends hadn't like totally pushed me into it. And then I win and I get offered a job just like I'm on So You Think You Can Dance. [he grunts] Diana Kelper: Everybody was totally shocked. Everyone was. My parents especially. Especially them. [looks into the far-off distance as car speeds on]"
