TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

The scenes where Gregory Peck and Buddy Ebsen ride up and down on the "People dumb waiter" were not shot in Berlin, but in Frankfurt. It's located in the old IG Farben building that used to be the 5th Corps Headquarters.

The fight between Gregory Peck and Broderick Crawford was filmed in one take.

Gregory Peck said that director Nunally Johnson was not a gifted director, although very close and kind to actors.

Their uniforms indicate both Van Dyke and Eddie were combat veterans of World War II. Van Dyke served in Italy with the 5th Army and earned the 2nd highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross, plus a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Eddie fought with the 4th Infantry Division in France and won both the Silver Star and Bronze Star for valor.

At one point during a quiet conversation, Colonel Van Dyke tells Mr Laetherby that he is from Praire du Chien, Wisconsin. Leatherby says that he knows of the places and asks "There's a college there, isn't there?" Van Dyke responds that yes, there is and it once had a pretty good football team. There is areal town in Wisconsin named Prairie du Chien. There was a Catholic college and high school there until 1925. At that time the college was discontinued and the high school continued as Campion Jesuit High School until 1975. At the time the movie was made, it would have been considered to be an excellent boy's college prep school with a good football team. The school educated boys only, but held social activities in conjunction with girl's schools in the area.

Popular Dialogues

"Col. Steve Van Dyke: [alone together in a hospital room] Well? Frederick S. Hobart: I want to know what you're up to Steve. Col. Steve Van Dyke: Why? Frederick S. Hobart: I don't care what you think of that government over there, you can't make any kind of a crooked deal with it. Col. Steve Van Dyke: Who's dealin' with any government? Frederick S. Hobart: Aren't you? Col. Steve Van Dyke: Now look Freddy, we asked them over there about Corporal Leatherby, didn't we? Frederick S. Hobart: Yes. Col. Steve Van Dyke: So what did they say? Frederick S. Hobart: That they'd never heard of him, of course. Col. Steve Van Dyke: So alright, how could I be makin' a deal with a government that never heard of him? Frederick S. Hobart: You know very well that that's only their way of doing things. Col. Steve Van Dyke: Not in my book. If a big, friendly power like the Russians tells they never heard of Corporal Leatherby, that's good enough for me. Now will you run along n' let me get on with this job? Frederick S. Hobart: Then whom are you dealing with? Col. Steve Van Dyke: Now look Freddy, for Pete's sake, don't you think the Russians like a little private enterprise as well as anybody else? As far as I'm concerned, I'm dealin' with a small group of progressive businessmen over there - what I think you Americans call a mob. Now is there anything wrong with that? [a knock at the door disrupts their conversation]"

"Frederick S. Hobart: Nothing that ever happens here is isolated. They kidnap a 19 year old boy, your son and we cant tell yet whether its a local needle or another Korea."
