Though promised a cleaned-up version of the extended VHS work-print dubbed "The Cabal Cut" in July 2014, fans were delighted when Scream Factory announced that the original film was found, restored at 4K and re-cut under Clive Barker's supervision, ending a 24-year-long plea for the "Directors Cut" to be released, in two packages in Oct. 2014.
The character played by David Cronenberg is named Dr. Philip K. Decker, a reference to sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. Deckard was the last name of the protagonist in Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", which was later adapted as Blade Runner (1982).
Clive Barker has gone on record as saying that he felt that distributor Fox and financiers Morgan Creek Productions never understood the film and simply cut the story to pieces so it would fit what their idea of the picture should have been.
