This miracle wish-fulfillment fairytale is about as color-by-numbers as Christian entertainment gets. On a Wing and a Prayer is definitely full of surprises. The finale uses not only a theatrical recitation of the Lord's Prayer but also an unplugged cover of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah†which is absolutely beautiful. the movie begins with God being compared to a distant relative that people talk about fondly in gatherings, then completely forget about Him during the action, only to call upon His protection just before it all ends in destruction. For an audience it is unwilling to challenge, On a Wing and a Prayer is nothing more than trite pandering that reduces the complexity of faith. The film has its moments of humor and warmth and the cast is well-suited and talented. Dennis Quaid is great at what he does and the rest of the actors have also performed well. It isn't an extraordinary film but can be watched.
