In a Q and A, Director Mike Ott said the loud gunshot sound that occurs throughout the film, was taken from Godard's Masculine Feminine (1966), and was inspired by Bertolt Brecht's idea of the Alienation Effect.
The film is part of Mike Ott's desert trilogy, which also includes Littlerock (2010) and Lake Los Angeles (2014). All three films are named after locations in the Antelope Valley.
