    Communal violence in 1960s East Pakistan forces Hindu families, including that of freedom fighter Nimai, to embark on a perilous journey to India, where his daughter Ashima goes missing. In Tripura, indigenous villagers, headed by Daishamoni, shelter them. Nimai's son Atul falls in love with Kumphui, Daishamoni's daughter, and they marry despite her brother's resentment. As misguided youth take up arms due to altered demographics, Nimai and his wife still pine for their lost daughter. Atul eventually finds Ashima, now Amina Begum, but their reunion is short-lived as Nimai cannot accept her. Tragedy strikes when militants gun down his wife, and Atul is kidnapped and killed. A shattered Nimai must leave the village once more with his pregnant daughter-in-law in search of safety.

Story
