Producer Stanley Kramer directed the framing story, which refers to the present-day story being told by Sidney Poitier to Peter Falk.
The hill where the "imaginary friend" scene was shot would later become the site of the Universal Studios theme park.
While Sidney Poitier's character appears to be considerably older than Peter Falk's, the two actors were only a few months apart in age (yet it is very clear that Poitier is aged purposefully in order to tell Falk the story of when he was younger, and Falk's age is the same as Poitier's youthful age, when most of this story takes place, during the story-telling flashback).
The film cast includes one Oscar winner: Sidney Poitier, and two Oscar nominees: Bobby Darin and Peter Falk.
The poster, with Sidney Poitier and Bobby Darin confronting each other as if about to wrestle, unmistakably mimics the poster for another race-themed Stanley Kramer production starring Sidney Poitier, The Defiant Ones (1958).
"Doctor: [angrily to the Patient] This is my country! This is where I've done what I've done, and if there were a million cruds like you, all sick like you are sick, all shouting, 'Down, destroy, degrade,' and if there were 20 million more sick enough to listen to them, you are still gonna lose! You're gonna lose, Mister, because there is something in this country, something so big, so strong that you don't even know... something big enough to take it from people like you and come back and nail you into the ground. You're walking out of here? You are going nowhere! Now get out!"
"Doctor: [furiously to the patient] You crud! You vicious, slimy. rotten little crud! [He slams the door] Doctor: Let me tell you something. Do you know what I wanted most? Despite what you are and despite what you were, I wanted to help you. I wanted to kill you. I would enjoy to kill you right now with my bare hands. But more than I wanted to kill you, I wanted to help you. Know what that makes me? More than a good man that makes me a doctor!"
