This is the second time Grant Gustin has starred in a movie about a dog. The first one was Rescued by Ruby (2022).

The film was inspired by BuzzFeed's 2015 series of short films for Purina Puppy Chow called Puppyhood, and produced by BuzzFeed Studios through Lionsgate.

On June 22, 2023, it was reported that Amazon Freevee had acquired the rights to the Lionsgate film, starring Lucy Hale and Grant Gustin, with the supporting cast including Jane Seymour, Michael Hitchcock, and Nore Davis.
