Richard Burton was the first choice for the lead but he dropped out after he was offered the lead in Alexander the Great (1956) at what Lewis Gilbert describes as "three or four times the salary".
In the same year this film was released Douglas Bader caused great controversy with his racist remarks on the public statements of African Commonwealth nations in regard to the Suez Crisis. In response to some of the more recent Commonwealth countries criticizing white colonial rule and the Anglo-French invasion of Egypt, Bader said they could "bloody well climb back up their trees".
Kenneth More initially felt he was too old to play Bader.
Douglas Bader wanted to have Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command Hugh Dowding and Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park replaced after the Battle of Britain.
Kenneth More had his legs cased in aluminium in order to accurately convey Bader's style of walking with his metal legs.
"Bader: [Bader is at a sanatorium in recovery and listening to a fellow patient complain about pains to one of his legs] . Have it off, old boy, have it off."
"Lorry Driver: [having narrowly avoided a collision with Bader's recklessly driven car] What's your name mate, Death?"
