A psycho-pathological vibe of a movie, it is a distressing and unpleasant piece of work in which the atmosphere is poisoned by remorse, fear, and shame. These are never finally and definitively explained, and I can't be entirely convinced that this obscurity is not a flaw of a first-time filmmaker. Instead, one must deduce what is happening through ambiguous clues and hazy hints. Natalia López Gallardo's feature debut is scary in all the right ways. It is a visually magnificent, intellectual, and truly unnerving examination of the effects of male aggression on the lives of three women played out in the merciless sunlight of rural southern Mexico. This is about as near as a movie can get to being a horror item without actually being one since the real horror, we are not permitted to forget, is in the lifestyles that the women are leading. The picture has the feel of an experimental playbook of unsettling cinematic tactics and atmospherics.
