According to Charlton Heston, Jennifer Jones broke two bones in her hand hitting him in a fight scene. As a result, Jones had to wear several bracelets covering up a cast.

This movie was the inspiration for a young singer from Mississippi named Roberta Lee Streeter to adopt the stage name Bobbie Gentry.

Charlton Heston says in his autobiography that Jennifer Jones wore no make-up during the shooting of the picture.

Previewed in Pasadena, California on September 24, 1952 and opened on Christmas day.

Ray Charles' version of the title song reached no. 28 in the 1960 Billboard charts.
