Ironically, Jack Black had to lose weight for the role of Hal.
After getting into her make up for the first time, Gwyneth Paltrow spent the rest of the day walking around in public. No one recognized her, and she used people's reaction to her as an obese woman to help understand her character in the film.
Jack Black's 20th feature film role, but his first as the lead actor.
When Rosemary jumps in the pool, the huge splash was created by two wide hoses (which Gwyneth Paltrow had to dive between) which shot off the streams of water on either side of her, simulating a huge splash of water.
Gwyneth Paltrow said she was taken aback by the way people treat the overweight. In a W magazine interview, Paltrow says, "The first day I tried the fat suit on, I was in the Tribeca Grand hotel in New York City and I walked through the lobby. It was so sad; it was so disturbing. No one would make eye contact with me because I was obese."
"[after Rosemary's weight crushed a chair] Hal: Jesus Christ! What the hell's wrong with this chair? What's this shit made out of, anyway? Restaurant Manager: Uhh... Steel."
"Tony Robbins: Hal, don't you think you're being a bit shallow here in the way you look at women? Hal: Well, no! You know, I'd like her to be into culture and shit, too. Tony Robbins: Ok Hal, hypothetical situation; Which do you prefer, a girlfriend missing one breast or half a brain? Hal: Hmmm, toughie. What about the remaining breast? Is it big?"
