Henry Hathaway lobbied for Ben Johnson to play the lead role.
Final film of Willis Bouchey. His baritone voice was dubbed by an actor with a much higher voice.
When Clay (Gregory Peck) is helping Decky (Dawn Lyn) off her horse at the deserted ranch, he calls her Scout, which was the name of Peck's daughter in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Henry Hathaway, considered along with Otto Preminger, as the most difficult director in the business to work with because of his nasty behavior with the actors and technicians, harassed, as usual, the crew and Gregory Peck had to interfere to protect them from the director's wrath. Hathaway was very deferential with his star.
Lomax tells Decky she is tough as "whang leather" because of her stubbornness. Decky asks him "What is Whang leather?" Lomax tells her "It's somethin' that don't come apart in the rain." Research of this term came up with some interesting definitions. The most popular seems to be a condom made from tanned bull penis, which seems appropriate since the Romans made something similar with leather. Additionally, a slang term for a condom is a "rain coat" as in "don't forget to wear your rain coat." Other opinions are leather ropes or woven from parts of the bull like the penis sheath that are used in ranging and cow work. Durable and they don't come apart when wet.
"Clay Lomax: Your friends! They took turns gunning old Trooper in his wheelchair. Shot him in the belly so he died real slow. Do you know what happens when you're shot in the belly? Well, you can't move. You can't breathe. You feel yourself fillin' up with blood... with pain! And you can't die!"
"[about to be released from prison, Clay empties his pistol's bullets into the warden's trash can] Prison warden: I wish you had kept them. I was countin' on you gettin' in a fix and comin' right back here. Clay Lomax: I ain't gettin' in any trouble... until I find the trouble I want."
