Many viewers have speculated that the character of Dr. Krueger and the boiler room scenes are references to A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). However, this film was actually shot in 1983 which was the year prior to when the picture shot in 1984.

Actress Lynn Redgrave was attached to play the lead female role of Dr. Joan Gilmore but withdrew from the project over salary differences. She allegedly wanted another US $10,000 to play the part to which the paycheck was apparently a budgeted US $35,000.
