Joan Huang, a Chinese-American high schooler, feels like an outsider and is ashamed of her appearance. Dreaming of becoming prom queen, she sees a chance when the most popular girl decides not to run. In her desperation for acceptance, Joan undergoes a mysterious and experimental 'ethnic modification' surgery at a clinic called Ethnos, which promises to make people of color appear white. She wakes up as a beautiful blonde, but soon discovers that her new identity comes at a horrifying physical and emotional cost.
