TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Director Bille August has admitted that the film did not turn out as well as he hoped. He said that in hindsight, adapting Peter Høeg's novel into film had serious problems from the script stage.

During filming on location in Greenland Richard Harris got into the freezing water of the Arctic for a scene where he has to try and climb out of the water onto an ice floe. Afterwards he said it was madness that he had agreed to do it.

The film cast includes three Oscar winners: Vanessa Redgrave, Jim Broadbent and Peter Capaldi; and there Oscar nominees: Richard Harris, Robert Loggia and Tom Wilkinson.

The film features several non-Nordic actors in Nordic roles, most notably Robert Loggia, who is of Italian descent.

The child's footsteps in the rooftop snow were in reality made by Danish special effects designer Hans-Peter Ludvigsen - wearing very small shoes.

Popular Dialogues

"Smilla: The number system is like human life. First you have the natural numbers. The ones that are whole and positive. Like the numbers of a small child. But human consciousness expands. The child discovers longing. Do you know the mathematical expression for longing? The negative numbers. The formalization of the feeling that you're missing something."

"Smilla: You know, Benja, one day that tight behind and those pert little boobs are going to start sagging. And when they do, my wonderful wealthy father is going to drop you and find someone else. Benja: [Stung] I don't care! Besides, by then you'll be dead of old age."
