Sofia Coppola wrote the role of Johnny Marco with Stephen Dorff in mind.
A number of the dialogs were improvised by the actors, notably the things said by Sammy (Chris Pontius) to Cleo (Elle Fanning). This was done in order to provoke genuine surprise from Fanning. Pontius, in fact, was specifically chosen for his improvisation skills, as well as his good rapport with children.
Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning spent a lot of time together prior to the shoot in order to build the father-daughter relationship their characters have. For example, Dorff sometimes picked Fanning up after school.
Executive producer Fred Roos suggested the casting of Elle Fanning. Her performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) impressed Roos. Sofia Coppola was initially reluctant however, believing Fanning to be a typical, professional Hollywood child actress, but agreed to meet her, and was won over.
There is no dialogue until 15:02 into the film.
"Johnny Marco: What's that book about again? Cleo: It's about this girl that's in love with this guy. But he's a vampire, and his whole family's vampires. So she can't really be with him. Johnny Marco: Why doesn't she become one too? Cleo: Because she can't. He doesn't want to turn her into a vampire. And if she gets too close to him, he won't be able to help himself. Johnny Marco: Oh, man."
"Johnny Marco: Hi, Cleo. Cleo: Hey. [beat] Cleo: Why are you taking a bath next door? Is yours broken? Johnny Marco: ...yeah."
