Several additional moments of gore were filmed after principal shooting on the movie had wrapped. That is because the Weinsteins, after a test screening of this movie, complained about the lack of blood and demanded re-shoots. Jeff Burr refused, and another director was hired to do the re-shoots. In an interview, Burr commented, "they cut a little bit of (the film) out and they added some badly done blood effects. Badly done, because Terry O'Quinn refused to do it. Really, they were meaningless, so that was irritating."
Terry O'Quinn ad-libbed some of his dialogue.
Meg Foster almost wasn't cast because of her striking light blue eyes.
This movie was originally intended as a made-for-video release.
The makers of this movie originally had Kay Lenz and Season Hubley in mind for the role of Carol. Hubley did, however, play Jennifer in Stepfather III (1992).

Carol Grayland: This is the same one that Matty had. Gene Clifford: So what? What's this all about? Carol Grayland: Answer the question, where did you get it? Gene Clifford: What's the difference? Carol Grayland: The difference is that you taught my son the same song that Sam heard the night that Matty died. That's difference! Now answer the question. Where did you get the wine? Gene Clifford: [Growling] What do I have to do? Why is this so hard? Haven't I said that I love you? Haven't I been like a father to that boy? I even had sex with you, for God's sake! [Grabs the bottle of wine] Gene Clifford: You will never-- [thudding] Gene Clifford: Find a better family man than me, pumpkin. [Gene is strangely whispered] Gene Clifford: Not in this lifetime. [Carol is looking up the door to walk away] Gene Clifford: Oh no. You can't just walk away from me. Not now. Not ever."
