For nearly two months, the USS Newark, carrying an experimental, top-secret military cargo, has been lost at sea. When the sub is finally discovered sixty miles off the coast of California, the government, eager to regain the lost cargo, assembles a highly-accomplished salvage team, accompanied by Dr. Carly Ryan - head of the original project - and her assistant. Based on the figures (380 feet long, displacing 7800 tons of water) given by the Major General at Pendleton, the USS Newark is a Virginia-class attack submarine. One of the civilian consultants, Lazlo, states the sub costs in excess of $30 million; a Virginia-class submarine actually costs approximately $2 billion, an amount more than 65 times the price Lazlo's declared.
Lazlo Hollyfield is also the name of the strange guy that lives in Val Kilmer's closet in Real Genius (1985).
