One of the paintings considered by Ossian "Osh" Popham (Burl Ives) to be Mrs. Hamilton is now hanging in the Golden Horseshoe at Disneyland.
Originally planned as a movie for Annette Funicello.
Hayley Mills has gone on record to say that this was her least favorite of all of the Disney movies she did while under contract at the studio.
Dorothy McGuire's vocals were dubbed by Marilyn Hooven.
Popular Disney star Annette Funicello was an experienced singer and dancer. This film was planned with her as the star. Apparently not knowing about this, she signed with American International Pictures, much to Walt Disney's displeasure, to appear in their film "Beach Party" (1963). That film was a big hit and it led to starring roles in a series of "Beach Party" and other feature films at AIP. Contrary to some sources, Walt Disney would later cast her in several more movies.
"Margaret Carey: It's Julia. She's coming to live with us. Gilly Carey: Oh, no! Nancy Carey: Oh, please! Not Julia! Margaret Carey: I want you two out of those dying gladiator attitudes! Julia is your cousin and a Carey and I don't want you to forget that, ever. Try to remember that Julia's story is rather a sad one. She never even knew her mother! And after her dear father died, the Fergusons very kindly took her in and raised her. Nancy Carey: Kindly took her in? George Ferguson had a guilty conscience. He knew those stocks he sold Julia's father were as worthless as ours."
"Peter Carey: She's not knock-kneed, Nancy!"
