Originally announced as a 3-D production in Variety 1982, hyping actress Linda Kerridge at the Cannes film market. The movie was subsequently filmed without the 3D gimmick, though some setups do seem to be set up to take advantage of 3D photography.
The trash in the garbage eating sequence was actually gelatin molded into different shapes.
Some of the items removed from the Zombie Surfer's digestive tract include: a carburetor, "J Hoffa's" underwear, a wooden plank with "ORCA" written on it (an homage to Jaws) an Audio Tape, a mirror, and a sting ray.
There is a director's cut on the Blu-ray disc that runs 100 minutes.

I wanted to be hip and bitchy and gnarly, but that's over now, it all ended one miserable afternoon: I was having an innocent soda, and they spiked it! And you know with what?
