The movie is based on actual events. Eric Houston, a former student, went on a rampage at Lindhurst High School in Olivehurst, California on May 1, 1992 where he had dropped out three years earlier. He shot and killed three students, one teacher, and wounded nine students and one teacher before surrendering to police. He was sentenced to death.
