Filmed in Evans City and Connoquenessing Pennsylvania. Many of the movie's bit players were locals; several of the white-suited soldiers were actually high-school students.
The burning house at the beginning of the film was a bit of serendipity for the film's crew. The local fire department was burning down an old house to practice putting out the fire, and agreed to let the filmmakers set up and film the event.
No Hollywood stunt men were used in The Crazies. Local firemen and licensed fireworks professionals handled all of the action sequences, including the creation and employment of blood squibs.
The budget for The Crazies was approximately $270,000 and it was Romero's first Union film but he also employed a lot of actors from Pittsburgh and non-professionals from Evans City and Zelienople.
The basis of the film was a script by Romero's friend and co-worker Paul McCollough entitled 'The Mad People'. McCollough gave the script to Romero with his blessing to re-write it and Romero turned out a revised version of it that was made into 'The Crazies'.
"Army Doctor: Okay, Colonel Peckem, last test is negative. You're all clean, virus free. We can sign you out. The helicopter will be arriving in a few minutes. Col. Peckem: Any news from Deitrich? Army Doctor: They're sending a new man from the Trixie project to take over as Dr. Watts' replacement. He should be here in the morning. If only we knew what Watts was working on. We checked the slides he left behind in his microscope and his notes, but we can't make heads or tails out of any of it. He was onto something, we know that. We'll dope it out sooner or later. Col. Peckem: [sighs] Sooner or later. Army Doctor: I understand that they found a Reeces monkey at Deitrich, immune. We'll find a human subject sooner or later. Col. Peckem: Yeah... sooner or later. [a soldier arrives with David, who is not showing symptoms] Soldier: Hey, you want an immunity check on this one, Doc? Army Doctor: [to the soldier] Are you kidding me? Put him with the others! [both Peckem and David make eye contact with each other, in which David smirks and he is taken away by the soldier, as Colonel Peckem also walks away towards the landing zone area]"
"Dr. Brookmyre: You've known about this for days! Maj. Ryder: We never thought it would happen like this. Dr. Brookmyre: But you notified me. You must have suspected. Maj. Ryder: Notifying you was precautionary. We never thought it was possible. Dr. Brookmyre: That doesn't matter now. We've got to call the hospital in Unity. We need an ambulance for those two kids! Maj. Ryder: I'm afraid I can't allow that. We're bringing in our own medical personnel with medical equipment. Dr. Brookmyre: But this isn't the sort of thing that you consider sweeping under the rug or... Maj. Ryder: Look, we've quarantined the area. We're sealing off the town!"
