"The First Slam Dunk" provides a puzzling and strange watching experience, captured by a single word. While the movie's title may mislead spectators, the decision to adopt the last battle from the manga brings a fresh surprise. However, this choice leaves non-fans feeling disoriented, lacking the necessary background information to grasp the game's significance. To compensate, the film explores Ryota Miyagi's turbulent family history and introduces viewers to a new sports environment. Despite the emotional depth it adds and its skilful connection of character histories, Ryota's limited involvement in the match feels out of place and could have been further developed. The imbalance in character motives, backstories, and rivalry development makes it challenging for newcomers to engage with the suspense of the crucial match depicted in the movie. Without a deep emotional connection to the characters, the impact of the stunning animation and impressive CG images, which convey the sport's passion, falls short. The movie's success at the Japanese box office can be attributed to its ability to please dedicated franchise fans. However, casual viewers may find themselves quietly satisfied but ultimately questioning the reasons behind the movie's high praise.
