Loosely based on "The Philip experiment", a 1972 parapsychology experiment conducted in Toronto, Ontario to determine whether subjects can communicate with fictionalized ghosts through expectations of human will.
Sam Claffin trained in 70s filmmaking and shot some scenes.
The scene with the Kirlian photography experiment, as seen through the lens of Brian's 16mm camera, was filmed by actor Sam Claflin himself, though not with the camera his character uses but with the contemporary professional Alexa camera of cinematographer Mátyás Erdély. Director John Pogue thought this would help achieve the raw look of found footage.
The Script was heavily rewritten for budget reasons.
"Phillip: You know, killing a young woman is a wonderful way to create a ghost."
"Professor Joseph Coupland: Why do I get the impression this is about to get unpleasant?"
