The film was originally to be shot on location in both India and Pakistan but India refused to grant a filming permit and the picture was shot on location in Pakistan only. Principal players never left Hollywood. Doubles filled in for them in the long shots and whatever other scenes that were needed.

At the time of production, actress Joan Caulfield was married to producer Frank Ross.

Lana Turner confessed in her autobiography that she did not appreciate Richard Burton on the set of the film.

The main theme of the soundtrack was lifted from Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A minor.

First Fox feature film for Lana Turner who was borrowed from M-G-M for the production.
