Agnes Driscoll, played by Meg Brogan, is a fictionalization of an actual historical person. The real Agnes Driscoll, who is sometimes described as "the first lady of naval cryptology," was one of the U.S. Navy's leading cryptanalysts during the twentieth century. She died in 1971 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
"A sin to err" is seen in two different places in the film - on a poster in the cryptanalysts' room and circled letters in the end titles. ASINTOER are the eight most used letters in the English language. This is used in frequency analysis to help break enciphered messages.
Eight actors from The Red Machine (2009) appeared in the short film Gandhi at the Bat (2006), which was also directed by Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm: Lee Perkins, Donal Thoms-Cappello, David Ross Paterson, Nicholas Tucci, Stephen Kirkpatrick, John Gordon, Doug Swim and Ryan Pamiez.
"F. Ellis Coburn: It's a capital offense, you know. Eddie Doyle: What? F. Ellis Coburn: What we're doing. It's espionage. If they catch us, the Japanese have every right to ship us back to Tokyo and have us executed. Eddie Doyle: You never told me that. F. Ellis Coburn: Didn't I? Eddie Doyle: No. I would have remembered that. F. Ellis Coburn: It's true. Eddie Doyle: You're just saying that to try and cheer me up. F. Ellis Coburn: It might not make the Denver Post, but it's one hell of an accomplishment."
"F. Ellis Coburn: The night of the mission, sir, we need Shimada out. Admiral Byron McAdams: A diversion. F. Ellis Coburn: Yes, sir. Admiral Byron McAdams: [to Petrie] Arrange a dinner, my place. [to Coburn] Admiral Byron McAdams: Thursday, you said? F. Ellis Coburn: Yes, sir, it's the Chu... Harrison Llewelyn Petrie: [interrupting] It is the Chugen holiday, sir. F. Ellis Coburn: That's correct, sir. Shimada would feel obligated to attend. Admiral Byron McAdams: Petrie, make it happen. Invitations... Harrison Llewelyn Petrie: Yes, sir. Embossed, sir? Admiral Byron McAdams: No. Crayons. What do you think we are, the goddamned Army? Of course, embossed! Gold leaf, the whole bit. Harrison Llewelyn Petrie: Aye-aye, sir!"
