In the original shooting script, the character of "Detective Rowland" was written to be portrayed as a "thin, pale, nervous-looking, 35-year old MAN". During the film's casting process, the director October Kingsley concluded that there were just too many male characters in the film, and not enough strong female characters. Kingsley decided to offer the crucial role of "Detective Rowland" to Hollywood legend Faye Dunaway instead of casting yet another typical male in the role. Dunaway read the script and within 24-hours after reading the script, Faye Dunaway accepted the role of "Detective Rowland".
"Professor Elam: [nodding slightly] Yes, you do look a little "peekish" my dear... and quite frankly, I have always wondered... Dr. Anna Fugazzi: Wondered about what? Professor Elam: Is there truly peace and order behind that calm exterior, or do you simply control your neurosis better than most people? Dr. Anna Fugazzi: Is that a question or an observation, Professor Elam? Professor Elam: Whichever you prefer, my dear."
"Dr. Anna Fugazzi: The future is not meant to be foreseen by anyone, Madame Tulare! Destiny is not something that bows down to us and demands to be revealed! Madame Tulare: My dear Doctor Fugazzi, can you really be so blind to the obvious fact that YOUR DESTINY IS SEALED? Thankfully we have the cards to guide us through that fine line between reality and illusion!"
