There are several references to the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. Magritte is the answer to one of Michael Connor's crossword puzzles, given by The Puzzler. The title of the film parallels the phrase "This is not a pipe" ("Ceci n'est pas une pipe") used in conjuncture with the image of a pipe in several Magritte paintings, namely The Treachery of Images (La trahison des images, 1928-29), The Tune and Also the Words (1964),and Les Deux Mystères (1966).
The title of this movie is a play on words, but it's also technically correct. This is not a film, it is a video that was shot on standard definition video at 30 frames per second giving it a very un-film like look.
"Michael Connor: Well, THAT sucked. Me sitting there on the couch? I know, that sucked. But please, hear me out."
"Michael Connor: I don't even know why we're doing this - why are we doing YOUR life story in MY video, that's what I want to know. George Connor: Because... It's your six degress of separation, jackass! You know ME. I went through THIS. I started my group, she came to the group - THAT'S how you know her. Think!"
