Kathleen Turner went on to play V.I. Warshawski on BBC radio.
Among other changes, producers wanted to set the film in Baltimore and cast either Amy Madigan, Bette Midler or Jane Fonda as Warshawski. Paretsky, however, was thrilled with the selection of Kathleen Turner.
In an interview, author Sara Paretsky was angry over an original script that had the independent female detective subordinate to a male counterpart for fear that a female character could not hold the lead role.
This was originally meant to spawn a series for Kathleen Turner, but the film's dismal US box office performance soon put an end to that.
V. I. Warshawski's full name is Victoria Iphigenia Warshawski.
