When the project was first announced, Maggie Gyllenhaal was attached to the lead role. Emilia Clarke eventually replaced the actress after the movie was stuck in development.
Although the film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Silvio Raffo, the film is considered to be a loose supernatural remake of the 1970s psychological thriller, What the Peeper Saw (1972). That movie starred Britt Ekland as a young woman who becomes concerned for her 12 year old stepson (played by Mark Lester), whose mother passed away and who develops abnormal behavior. Voices from The Stone (2017) was released 45 years after What The Peeper Saw (1972).
When Verena puts on Malvina's dress, after she tears her skirt, the dress fits her perfectly. In fact however, there's clearly a substantial height different between the two women. Malvina, is considerably taller and all of the clothes would have needed alterations, if they were to be even wearable by Verena.
Actress Emilia Clarke's 13th nude scene on-screen. She had previously appeared nude 12 times in the television series Game of Thrones (2011). She had also appeared nude in the feature film Terminator Genisys (2015) (as Sarah Connor), but no bare breasts or bare bottom were visible on camera.
The film was not released in New Zealand.
"Verena: I try to think of a time before this. I hardly know the woman I see. But the past is a dream from which we wake with each new morning. We are, none of us, quite who we were."
"Verena: [Verena is talking to Jakob who is mute] I once knew a boy who thought he could hear his dead sister through the teeth of an old comb. He would sit with it for hours, listening and whispering his secrets. He was as sure of what he heard as you are. The mind is capable of extraordinary things. It is your mind that is speaking to you, Jakob, nothing else."
