Charlton Heston often said that of all the films he made, this was his favorite.
Real antique rifles and pistols were rented as props instead of using studio stock props, in order to give this movie greater authenticity.
The hat that Charlton Heston wore here and in about four other westerns was a treasured item of his. It was later stolen.
Charlton Heston once said of this movie: "The script for 'Will Penny' was one of the best I ever read, it made a marvelous Western."
Bruce Dern once said of working with Charlton Heston on this movie, "I got to really like the guy. A lot of people told me that I wouldn't like him, but I liked him, and he tried very hard. I mean, 'Will Penny' is far and away the best thing he's ever done."
"Will Penny: [to Catherine] It's just a case of too soon old and too late smart."
"[Dutchie has been seriously wounded and the nearest doctor in a hundred miles away] Catron: Best thing you can do for him, pilgrim, is make him rest easy while he waits till the end. Anything he drinks is on the house. And then you can bury him out back and away from the hogs. And it won't cost much. I'll even carve him a nice head marker. Twenty-five dollars sound about right? The ground is kind of hard this time of year... and the diggin' ain't easy."
