IMDbKirsten Dunst described her role as the most challenging part she has ever done, even more challenging than her acclaimed roles in Lars von Trier's Melancholia (2011) and the television series Fargo (2015 season).
Scenes were shot in the town of Arcata in Humboldt County, located in Northern California, which is where the Mulleavy sisters grew up.
At about 1:07:00 into the movie, there is a shot of Kirsten Dunst's face that is strongly reminiscent of the iconic cover image for the movie "The Virgin Suicides," which also starred Dunst. "The Virgin Suicides" was directed by Sophia Coppola who, along with Kirsten Dunst, is also close friends with the Mulleavy sisters, who directed this movie. The shot in "Woodshock" is likely a nod to the Coppola movie.
In the scene where Theresa goes to the corner store and buys the flashlight, she's wearing a shirt with "Taurus" written across the front. Born on April 30th, Kirsten Dunst is a Taurus.
"[first lines] Theresa: Remember when we used to play in the woods together? I got lost that one summer. When I turned around, you were gone. When they found me, I almost didn't want to come back."
