The bigger talking point is around hardware. The same leak claims Apple could introduce cost-cutting changes in the iPhone 18, bringing it closer to the more affordable ‘e’ model than usual. These changes reportedly include a downgraded manufacturing process for the chipset, lower chip specifications, and reduced memory, either in capacity or speed. The likely reason is rising chip costs, which have been affecting smartphone pricing across brands.

If these downgrades are relative to the Pro models, it simply widens the gap between tiers, something Apple has already been doing. But if the base iPhone 18 ends up being a step down from the iPhone 17, that would be a more noticeable shift, but that’s highly unlikely.

It’s also worth noting that cost-cutting at the hardware level does not necessarily mean the phone will be cheaper. Apple has historically maintained pricing even when adjusting components, so the benefit may be more about protecting margins than lowering the entry price.
